‘In Expectation of the Thaw’
A musical Ice Palace under the Northern Lights
in The Arctic Circle, February 2009
In March 2009 the world’s largest igloo will be the setting for an unforgettable experience blending music, film and sculpture deep within the Arctic Circle.
World Premiere
In the frozen forests of Finnish Lapland an extraordinary experience will grow out of the natural environment. Using snow and ice cut directly from the rivers and lakes, the largest ice domed structure in the world will be created for the World Premiere of a new work by young film composer Rhett Brewer.

The music will be recorded with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, and will be performed in the Arctic as well as in Tampere, and high-profile venues such as London’s Trafalger Square in addition to performing arts venues around the world.
Multi-Media
The performances will blend sculpture and music with the visually stunning work of Polish film director Lucas Jedrzejak. Projected onto the inside of the unique ice cave, the films will blend with sound and space to take the audience on a journey through the almost forgotten culture of the indigenous Sami people.
Touching on themes of global warming, displacement, and the struggle to retain cultural identity in a changing world, the film will be specially commissioned for this project.
Ice Palace
Father and son team Jamie and Duncan Hamilton will design and construct the ice environment for the project, including stage designs made of ice for each venue..
Described by the Telegraph as ‘The Jacob Epstein of Ice’ and with recent commissions for Justin Timberlake, Elton John and Jade Jagger, Duncan and Jamie are Europe’s most renowned ice sculptors.
They will also be teaching ice sculpting in the snowy fields of Finland for the art experience of a lifetime. For more information and to find out how you can become involved, visit: www.blackiceproductions.co.uk
